ORLANDO, Fla. (May 19, 2016) – More than 20,000 athletes from across the nation will compete in various marquee AAU Basketball events during Memorial Day Weekend, as an expected 2,400+ teams head to venues from New Orleans, to Reno to Honolulu for top-level competition and an opportunity to win a berth to AAU Nationals.
The world's largest AAU basketball tournament will be held yet again in Reno, Nevada for the 15th year. Over 1,200 teams compete on 85+ courts in the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in the premier ‘All Under One Roof’ event of its kind. This is an event model that host Jam On It has perfected in recent years.
Rounding out are 100 team tournaments in Salt Lake City, Utah and another 100 team tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In Orlando, Florida, hosted by the AAU National Office in the heart of Walt Disney World Resort at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the AAU Memorial Day Classic heats up with a new “late night hoops fest” this year, as 440+-plus teams and 4,500 athletes compete well past midnight for a berth to AAU Nationals.
Other events this weekend include but are not limited to the following:
-One of the largest event of the weekend, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Super 60 (New Orleans, La.) has become one of the most hotly contested basketball events in the country. Beginning just six years ago with 60 teams, the event now attracts 400 of the top teams from around the country to converge in the Big Easy. Click here for more information.
-The final stop in the inaugural year of the AAU Super Regional’s Southern Showcase Series, a competitive youth basketball league that merged four existing tournaments in an effort to increase competition, is in Jackson, Miss. over Memorial Day Weekend. While an event has been hosted in Jackson for the last four years, the 2016 event has seen an increase of more than 50 teams in its first year under the auspices of the CYBL and is now expected to bring an estimated 115 teams to the city of Jackson.
